About time, he should have gone after the whitewash in Australia.

Good. Obviously all of our batting and bowling inabilities were solely down to him so they can now become the responsibility of St Joe of Headingly.
I hope the responsibility fucks his game up completely while Cookie adds another couple of thousand runs to his total.

Prior to this one, there have been eight responses to this post, four of which have been facetious in some way.
Which goes some way to showing how expected and non-controversial this resignation is.

I'm not including ornchurch's, which while facetious, does make a point.

As a Kent supporter it pains me to say this, be careful what you wish for, he deserves much much more thanks
The bloke is a wonderful cricketer, just hope he continues with piling on the runs for his country.
Thank you for your service and for such great moments as an England fan

I wonder if he'll continue playing for england? would do Essex a big favour if he just concentrated on club cricket

I think Goochie and Ramps were the last two that gave much of a shit about county cricket. Maybe Trescothick. It's a different era. But Chelmsford id quite near his sheep, so you never know.
Perhaps he could become an amateur batsman like those Revs and Drs of the thirties and fifties.

Cook isn't & hasn't been a good skipper & just don't know how anyone can logically deny that.
Top run scorer for England speaks for itself even with the greater number of tests played & hope he now goes on to score even more runs now that burden has been lifted from him.
No one knows how Root will perform as a captain & how it will affect his game & have to wait & see. Certainly hope it lifts his form & he becomes more consistent in getting big scores & daddy hundreds rather than the useful but non / not enough match winning contributions that he currently makes.

RC - If anyone other than him and Root ever made any runs it would help.
As a skipper I rate him only as OK, but no-one should forget the difference in consistency of the top order batting available to his predecessor and that at his own disposal. Nor should the absence from his sides, for the most part, of a world-class spinner be overlooked .

He was certainly in my mind FC, but there were a lot more in county cricket around that time. Not excluding the Good Doctor himself.
Obviously he was a bit earlier.

He should have taken responsibility when he captained England against the worst Australian side in a decade and still got thrashed 5-0, he should have quit then.
